Steel shot is manufactured by melting scrap in an electric induction furnace. The molten metal is
then formed into small, uniform particles, called shot. The shot is then dried, quenched and
tempered, resulting in a product of uniform hardness and microstructure. This material is then
screened by size to meet SAE specifications. This enables it to meet the toughest requirements
for shot peening and blasting applications.
Lead shot
The use of lead shot is illegal in the United States, and most upland game agencies prohibit its
use. It is also not allowed for use in hunting waterfowl. Steel shot, on the other hand, is
biodegradable and faster. Since lead is not biodegradable, it can stay in the environment for
longer periods. This means that using steel shot will not poison the environment, your game, or
yourself.
